As many of you are probably well aware, the country is in the grasp of a horrible opioid use epidemic. This covers both prescription drug abuse and the abuse of many illegal drugs. This is threatening the lives of not only those who use these drugs, but many of the first responders and even funeral workers who come to collect the bodies of those who have been taken by it. There was recently a case in Ohio where an officer found some white powder on his uniform after handling a body and brushed it off thinking nothing of it. He then ended up having to receive four shots of Narcan before being fully stabilized due to the drug absorbing through his hand and causing him to overdose.

This is a horrifying time and I personally do not think I know anyone who has not been affected in one way or another by this terrible addiction sweeping the country. This is one of the reasons that Chiropractors think that their work is so incredibly important and I have to concur. In a society that has been giving out pain killers almost like candy, those doctors who use other techniques to help their patients deal with pain seem to be more important now than ever.

While we are not saying that chiropractors are better than other kinds of doctors, we cannot ignore that prescription drug abuse is something that has ruined many people’s lives. Not only does addiction harm the person who needs the substance, but those who love them as well. It has been documented that even when doctors refuse to refill scripts, patients will find another way to deal with the pain. I know that’s what happened to one of my loved ones, although thankfully he is now in recovery.

Chiropractic care is often looked down on as “new age” medicine because we don’t use pills. However, in the light of this epidemic that is taking over so many lives, we can’t help but wonder if maybe this is what some people need. Many are in pain, both mentally and physically, and chiropractic care has been shown to be a positive influence for those problems. If you or a loved one suffers from opioid addiction, please seek help. You may also want to come in and try chiropractic care to help stop some of that physical pain along with addiction therapy. You owe it to yourself and those you love.
