Sometimes, we just hurt. This is true any time of the day or night and it is never fun. While we are trying to go about our daily routine, it may become extremely distracting to have high levels of pain and no seeming cure. One thing that you can try is stretching either at night before you go to bed or in the morning when you wake up. Perhaps you may want to try both! Here are some ideas that you can use to stretch yourself out and hopefully hurt a little less.

  1. Touch Your Toes. The classic stretch is trying to touch your toes. If you are standing up, you want to stand with your feet shoulder width apart and relax your entire upper torso in an attempt to touch your toes. Breathe deeply and then let it out again. This will normally allow you to dip lower and stretch the backs of your legs as well as your back itself. If you are in bed or on a couch, sit with your legs straight out in front of you and reach toward your toes to achieve the same result.

  2. Arm Stretches. These may give you flashbacks to high school gym class, but they are effective. Bending your arm at the elbow and placing your hand behind your head on your upper back and gently pulling with the other can help to stretch out some of the muscles in your arm. Continue to do this until you feel a tug so you know that it is working.

  3. Neck Rolls. Rolling your neck gently is something that may be able to help pain you have there. Never try and push your neck, however, as serious damage can be done. Keep your mouth open in a natural position and slowly roll your head around to the right and the left. Always be careful with this stretch in particular.

Getting the correct amount of sleep is something that is extremely important to every living creature. While it may seem like a wonderful thing that cats can sleep an average of sixteen hours a day, this would not be good for humans no matter how tempting it may be. Over sleeping is just as dangerous as not sleeping enough, and can cause your body quite a bit of damage. Here are some reasons to be cautious of sleeping too much.

  1. Medical Concerns. The human body normally only needs just so much sleep. If you are sleeping more than the recommended amount, then it may be a reason to see a doctor. Studies have been done that show that those who oversleep are more likely to have a mental health issue such as depression, or have an underlying medical disorder such as an untreated heart condition or other circulatory issue. If you are unsure why you are sleeping a lot, or constantly feel tired, head into your doctor and see if you may have another reason to be constantly lethargic.

  2. Sleep Apnea. One reason you may feel tired after waking up in the morning is because of a condition such as sleep apnea. This is a disorder which obstructs your airways at night and causes a moment of pause in the natural breathing cycle. This can cause issues with a sleeping habit and may make the sufferer feel more tired.

  3. Medication. Certain medication may make some of us feel drowsy. Generally this will be posted on the bottle, but even small things can make the effects on our sleep change. Something as simple as not eating before taking your medication or taking it at a different time may cause the additional need for sleep.

  4. Headaches. Sleeping more than eight hours a night, even on weekends or vacation, may cause head pain. Many times, our reaction to a headache is to go and lay down if possible, however this may simply be making it worse. Ask yourself if you’ve been sleeping too much and it may be causing the pain.

What Conditions Do Chiropractors Treat? This is always a fun question for us to get. While it’s automatic for us to want to say that we treat “all the things”, this isn’t quite true. This may be the knees, it may be eyes, nose, and throat, it could be any number of things that a specific doctor specializes in. A chiropractor, however, treats the entire body. Is This Covered By My Insurance? While each insurance policy is different, most do cover chiropractic services at least partially. Contact your provider to check, though. Also, make sure that the office you plan to go to takes your insurance before you get a surprise bill.

This week I really wanted to focus on the basics of chiropractic care. Very often, we forget that chiropractic care isn’t just going in once a week, having our neck cracked, and walking out again. While some chiropractors do focus on one type of demographic or area of the skeleton, the fact remains that they can all work on basically anyone. The other reason chiropractors are so versatile is because they aren’t only able to perform spinal manipulations. Since they go through medical school like any other doctor, they understand the basics like the rest. If you are like many other Americans living around the country, you very well may wake up stiff and sore in the morning. Perhaps it goes away throughout the day, but it may stick with you. It is never comfortable to feel stiff when you try doing anything. Unfortunately, there is no way another person can know if you are feeling stiff or sore. Even if you tell someone about your discomfort, they will not truly know the extent of your pain. Sometimes you aren’t even believed, which can be extremely infuriating. There are many reasons why you may feel sore, but here are the most likely reasons.

  1. Muscle Knot. A knot in the muscle can cause extreme soreness and discomfort. Knots can technically form anywhere you have muscle, however the shoulders and back are the most common area to find them. Although there are not actual knots involved, it certainly feels like there is a bump under the skin similar to one. These are contractions in the muscles that are similar to a spasm.

  2. Arthritis/Fibromyalgia. Arthritis is one of the biggest reasons why people wake up stiff. This can depend on what kind of arthritis, how far it has progressed, and even things like what elevation you live at or what the weather is like. If you wake up in pain most days, think about seeing a rheumatologist and ask your normal doctor if you may be suffering from arthritis or fibromyalgia.

  3. Slept Wrong. If you don’t wake up in pain most days, or even if you do, it may be something as simple as the way you are sleeping. Try getting a new pillow, or maybe even a new mattress. See if you can get comfortable in a different position. You may want to set up a webcam overnight so you can see if you twist into any odd positions in your sleep.

  4. Stress. When we sleep, we are not technically in control of our bodies. Although we think of ourselves as relaxing at night, this isn’t always the case. Some people move all night and this is especially true if you are stressed. You may tense your body all night without knowledge or it may simply be the stress you feel manifesting itself physically.

Getting out from under the covers is one of the hardest fights to win. The blankets have accepted you as one of their own and you certainly don’t want to hurt their feelings by leaving, right? Well, unfortunately for most of us, we do need to get up out of bed and go to work or drive someone to school or get food together and go on with our daily lives as if our bed wasn’t calling to us longingly as we closed the door behind ourselves. If you’re anything like me, you’ll need a few of these tips to help you deal with mornings better.

  1. Get Enough Sleep. This is the one that we see over and over. The problem is, this isn’t always possible. Many of us have work obligations, family obligations, or sometimes even pets that won’t let us sleep for more than an hour at a time. The correct amount of sleep is extremely important, though, and you need to do your best to get it. If you’re having trouble sleeping, talk to a doctor about what options you may have to help you get those extra “Z”s that you’re missing out on.

  2. Unplug. While those last few twitter updates may be hilarious, it has been shown that blue light which emits from most electronics can disrupt your sleep cycle. This means that you either need to find something which cuts down on blue light or spend about an hour before bed not looking at electronic screens. Try getting your lunch together for the next day, laying your clothes out, or reading a good paper copy of a book.

  3. Stay Awake. If you wake up a few minutes before your alarm, it can be tempting to close your eyes and try to get a few extra minutes. This, however, is not a good idea. If you woke up spontaneously, that means that you were in a light sleep cycle and falling back asleep may make it more difficult to get up.

Mornings are terrible and I dislike them as much as, if not more than, the next person. However, most of us don’t have the luxury of waking up at our leisure and lying in bed for hours. Follow these steps so you can retire early and do just that.

As I sit here and write this article, I feel a large amount of both sympathy and empathy for many of you reading this. That is because it is raining here and my knee is throbbing in pain. I have felt this storm coming for a couple of days now and I’m not sure which was worse, before the storm or now. Due to the fact that I suffer from a form of arthritis, I can use my body like a barometer that honestly is more accurate than the one that is hanging outside. I am sure, dear reader, that many of you feel the same when these storms hit.

Feeling pain when it is raining or snowing is not an uncommon complaint for many people, especially if you suffer from certain chronic joint disorders. Believe me, you are not imagining it. This has been a complaint of many people for as far back as anyone can find. Although we don’t have a full answer, the leading idea as to the reason for this is that when it rains, when the barometric pressure drops, it can cause swelling of the muscles and tissues around a joint. This is specifically found in joints that have arthritis, as something in the disease makes the tissue more sensitive to these atmospheric changes.

Unfortunately, there is no way to stop this internal weatherman from alerting you to the fact of a storm days in advance. However, if you are in pain you can try elevating the joint, resting, icing the area, or using a brace. Small amounts of over the counter medicines are good for this kind of pain as well. If the pain is severe, talk to your doctor and see what other options you may have.

Chiropractic Weekly Wellness Tips - Week 2

This week, I wanted to focus on pain that could have occurred during winter. Unfortunately, there are a lot of different ways that winter can be harmful, despite the beauty that many associate with this season. Here are some pain relieving tips that you can use to combat the wintertime blues and welcome in the spring.

  1. Stretching. Yes, I am still suggesting stretching. I will never stop suggesting stretching. Stretching increases blood flow to your muscles and helps to create a better range of motion for you. This means you are less likely to fall, more likely to stay warm and alert, and you will be more flexible. There is literally no downside to stretching that I have ever experienced as long as you respect your own limits.

  2. Dress Appropriately. If it is cold out, please do your best to stay warm. Use layers and make sure that you don’t go outside without gloves, hats, scarves, or the like on. Even if you are female and like to wear dresses (or need to for some reason), you can either wear leggings with some kind of insulation underneath or change when you get to your destination.

  3. Stay Hydrated. Because it is cold out, many of us forget to keep drinking as much as we would during the hot days of summer. However, you still need to stay hydrated to keep your muscles from cramping and to keep your body running how it should.

  4. Take A Warm Bath. If you don’t like or can’t take a bath, a shower will work as well. Letting warm water soothe your muscles can help relieve pain and loosen up any knots or muscle cramps that you may be experiencing. If you’re feeling a little stressed, you may want to look into aromatherapy as well, as many scents can help to relax you even while you’re bathing.

  5. Take Vitamin D. In the winter, we are less likely to get the appropriate amount of vitamin D from the sun, so talk to your doctor and see if a supplement is the right choice for you.
